POLICIES

EA aims to encourage Christians to think biblically about the issues surrounding the forthcoming election, with a special focus on values. EA will make some clear statements but is really interested in encouraging people to think for themselves, using Christian principles. EA will avoid being party political or telling people how to vote. EA will not recommend any specific candidate or party above another.

Listed below are five policy areas. Each contains a statement about that area from a Christian perspective. It does not claim to be the only perspective and it does not deal with every aspect of the issue. It is a statement which still requires individuals to determine their course of action. They go beyond simply saying ‘Christian ought to be concerned about this…’ but not so far as becoming party political.

We hope that they are the kind of resource that can be used, or modified for use, in worship. Let us work to end the alienation of justice and other contemporary social issues from the worship life of the church.

There are links to prayers on each topic and suggestions for prayer. There are also suggestions for hymns and contemporary songs from various traditions and discussion questions and preaching suggestions.

Christian values and economic policies including material on the morality of economics; the promise and the threat of material goods; Christian responsibility for others; economic growth and justice

A global perspective on economics including material on the needs of the 50 least developed nations and the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals.

National security and international responsibility including material on peace, border control and security and r efugees and Australian values.

Family, marriage and children including material on family and children; children in need; government policy and children in detention; the definition of marriage.

Christian-Muslim relations: With ‘Islamic’ terrorism taking place throughout the globe, with ‘Christian’ nations involved militarily in the Middle East and with religious vilification actions taking place in Victoria relationships between Christians and Muslims have become more difficult. For these reasons the Evangelical Alliance has prepared a statement concerning the principles involved in Christian – Muslim relationships. To download a PDF of the statement, click here.
